The Ache

The Ache, The Deeper Problem

There is an ache of the soul- a desire for greater meaning in life that only one person can fulfill.  Maybe you’ve tried substances, sex, or success and have found what all eventually find. You cannot medicate the ache.  But there is someone who can take away the ache.

More importantly, there is a deeper problem, an eternal problem, a sin problem. Sin has separated us from God, all of us. Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We have all lived jacked up lives to some extent—some worse than others. Because of our sin we’re on a road that separates us from God and leads to Hell (Matthew 7:13). None of us wants to spend an eternity in torment and separation from God. What do we do? We look to the Remedy.

The Remedy

Jesus is the remedy. Rom. 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).  John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

He is the only one than can bring the deepest fulfillment to our cry for meaningful purpose and, more importantly, He is the only one who can remedy our eternal sin problem that, unless solved, will lead us to spend an eternity in Hell.

Jesus saves those who trust in him by shedding His blood on the cross for our sins. “Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him (Rom. 5:9)!” He is the only way to salvation. With the remedy in sight, now what? We must respond.

The Response

We must reach for the remedy. How do we do this? Do we act better? No.

Do we go to church more? No! In fact it is not what we do but what we believe. The only remedy is faith alone in Christ alone. In Rom 3:24 we “are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” How are we justified freely? By faith. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God (Rom. 5:1-2).

We must believe that we are sinners and that Jesus the son of God died on the cross and rose from the dead to pay for one’s penalty for sin in order to give eternal life to all those who trust in Him and Him alone for salvation. It’s not what you do it’s what you believe. It must be a mental and a heart assent. You must believe with your mind and your heart that Jesus is the only way.  He is the only remedy.

Rom. 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Rom. 10:10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
